On the 'Virtual Organisation'

We are using the term 'virtual organisation' to describe ASEANwind, and some of you might be asking, what is it?  It is actually something that is not new, at least not in wind engineering.  One such concept is the 'engineering virtual organisation' which has been started by the New Frontier of Education and Research in Wind Engineering, the Global Center of Excellence (GCOE) Program of the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT) at the Tokyo Polytechnic University (TPU), lead by Prof. Yukio Tamura.

To learn more, visit http://www.wind.arch.t-kougei.ac.jp/system/eng/contents/code/evo_vortex_winds.

The GCOE Program at TPU is actually in collaboration with the NatHaz Modelling Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, Illinois, USA, headed by Prof. Ahsan Kareem.  Prof. Kareem's NatHaz Lab in collaboration with GCOE-TPU has started the implementation of this virtual organisation with the website called VORTEX-winds.

Is ASEANwind similar to VORTEX-winds?  Yes.  Are they the same?  No.  ASEANwind of course is more specific to Southeast Asian wind engineering activities.  And VORTEX-winds is financially and thus also technologically more advanced than ASEANwind.  ASEANwind as mentioned, currently has the goal of gathering together wind engineering practitioners from or in Southeast Asia to promote this field of study in this part of the world.

ASEANwind attendees at the APCWE-VII and APEC-WW2009

It has been about a month ago since wind engineers from around Southeast Asia attended the 7th Asia-Pacific Conference on Wind Engineering (APCWE-VII) which was held in Taipei, Taiwan from 8-12 November 2009.

Right after the APCWE-VII some delegates also attended the APEC-WW2009,

The "ASEANwind" website has been created

Since 3 December 2009, the "ASEANwind" website is now online.  The website is built on Google's Blogger platform.  The aim of the website is to have a central location for information and news related to wind engineering in the Southeast Asian region.

What is Wind Engineering?

"Wind engineering is best defined as the rational treatment of interactions between wind in the atmospheric boundary layer and man and his works on the surface of Earth." - Dr. Jack E. Cermak

Note on the name "ASEANwind"

Please note the name "ASEANwind" is intended as a short form of this website for Wind Engineers and Wind Engineering in Southeast Asia.  This website, its contents, and any contributors to this website are not in anyway directly associated with the Association of South East Asian Nations.  For more information on the ASEAN, please visit their website at http://www.asean.org/.

Suggesting Content for the ASEANwind website

In the future, this article will contain guidelines on what types of content can be posted on the ASEANwind website.

If you would like to post content on the ASEANwind website, please post a comment on this article...

Organisations, Government Agencies, and other Groups related to Wind or Wind Engineering

This article provides web links to different organisations, government agencies, and other groups on wind and wind engineering.  Please contribute and update.

Past Conferences

This article lists past wind engineering and related conferences, and other similar activities, where ASEANwind members attended, participated, or presented papers on wind engineering related research or projects.

How to Join ASEANwind

Currently ASEANwind is only a 'virtual organisation' which uses the vast resources of the internet for communication and cooperation in the field of wind engineering.  It is effectively an ad-hoc/informal group of wind engineers in Southeast Asian[1] countries.

There is currently no formal membership requirements, but it is desireable that interested individuals have done some wind engineering research or practicing wind engineering, have attended courses that are specific to wind engineering, and either a citizen of one of the Southeast Asian countries or a practicing wind engineer currently employed in any of the Southeast Asian countries.

List of Members - December 2009

Note: As ASEANwind is only currently a "virtual," adhoc/informal organisation, an individual is considered a member if he/she is subscribed to the ASEANwind e-group.  For more information on "membership," visit the "How to Join" page.

National Codes and Standards - Wind Loads

This article is a list of governing national codes and standards which specify the minimum design wind loads in each of the Southeast Asian countries.

National Codes and Standards - Wind Environmental Specifications

This article is a listing of all laws and specifications related to wind environments in each of the Southeast Asian countries.
