On the 'Virtual Organisation'

We are using the term 'virtual organisation' to describe ASEANwind, and some of you might be asking, what is it?  It is actually something that is not new, at least not in wind engineering.  One such concept is the 'engineering virtual organisation' which has been started by the New Frontier of Education and Research in Wind Engineering, the Global Center of Excellence (GCOE) Program of the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT) at the Tokyo Polytechnic University (TPU), lead by Prof. Yukio Tamura.

To learn more, visit http://www.wind.arch.t-kougei.ac.jp/system/eng/contents/code/evo_vortex_winds.

The GCOE Program at TPU is actually in collaboration with the NatHaz Modelling Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, Illinois, USA, headed by Prof. Ahsan Kareem.  Prof. Kareem's NatHaz Lab in collaboration with GCOE-TPU has started the implementation of this virtual organisation with the website called VORTEX-winds.

Is ASEANwind similar to VORTEX-winds?  Yes.  Are they the same?  No.  ASEANwind of course is more specific to Southeast Asian wind engineering activities.  And VORTEX-winds is financially and thus also technologically more advanced than ASEANwind.  ASEANwind as mentioned, currently has the goal of gathering together wind engineering practitioners from or in Southeast Asia to promote this field of study in this part of the world.
